35 YEARS OF EXILE

I don't know how I missed this, but May 12th was the 35th Anniversary of the release of Exile On Main Street from The Rolling Stones. The Stones were Bill's favorite band and Exile was probably his favorite album. I remember that he had a cassette version of the release that he bought in Spain. He used to like to point out the translation for Turd On The Run (Cocka Fugitiva).

If you haven't listened to it for a while, here's your chance.

BRUCE VS. THE STONES

I was just watching some video footage from the soon to be release "Live In Dublin" from Bruce Springsteen with The Sessions Band and I started to think about some of the conversations that Bill and I had regarding our favorite bands. We both had an appreciation for The Beatles so it seems we never really spoke about them except when we found some obscure unreleased material. However, when it came to our individual favorites (Rolling Stones for Bill and Bruce Springsteen for me) we seemed to always try to sway one another by explaining the appeal of our respective favorites. We seemed to have a mutual respect for each other's favorite - typically Bill would point out a favorite tune from a Bruce album or concert and I would do the same with the Stones.

Having said that, I would have certainly forwarded these links to Bill so that he could see and hear some of Bruce's new stuff. And so, I share these with you.

SAY A PRAYER FOR BO

I just read that Bo Diddley suffered a stroke earlier this week. It seems that the stroke hit Bo during a performance and he became disoriented. The stroke affected the left side of his brain and has impaired his speech and voice recognition. I know that Bill enjoyed some of Diddley's work so I'm sure this news would have interested him.

My musical share is a Diddley tune that made Bill laugh and continues to make me smile everytime I hear it.

Happy Mother's Day Mom, Cindy, Suzie...and to every mother everywhere. In case you didn't know, today marks the 100th Anniversary of Mother's Day. I hope you all enjoy yours.

Here's a picture of Bill with our mom in 1988. My musical share for today is a song from Pink Floyd's "The Wall".

ELVIS COSTELLO

It's hard to believe that Elvis Costello has been around for 30 years. I remember visiting Bill on 58th Street and listening to one of the early albums. I distinctly remember that he liked "This Year's Girl" from the album "This Year's Model". I know that Bill was a big Elvis fan so I thought I would share an event in which he would have surely been interested.

On Monday, May 14, 2007, at 8:35 PM (Easter), The Late Show website on CBS.com will stream a live Elvis Costello event.

Click here for a web simulcast of:

Elvis Costello live from the Ed Sullivan theatre.

Here's a picture of Bill (with Bitsy) from around the time (July 31, 1978) of the release of "This Year's Model". My musical share for today is one of my favorite Elvis Costello tracks. The title of the song makes it best dedicated to my ex-sister-in-law.

WOLFGANG'S VAULT

Back in December, Mike Groob passed along this information. Since I agree with his remark that Bill would have appreciated it, I am passing on the link to share with you. Here are Mike's comments concerning the link:

When you have a chance, check out this website. It’s got tapes of old concerts from the Fillmore days, as well as all sorts of vintage paraphernalia. It’s been compiled from Bill Graham’s archives (Wolfgang was Bill Graham’s real name). Your brother definitely would have appreciated it, so by extension I’m passing it on to you.

Since the time when Mike forwarded the message and today, the Vault has been upgraded. Now, not only can you stream the concerts for free, you can also purchase many of the them. Happy Listening!!!
